36 Views of Patawarta : 1979 -1990

A series of thirty six prints (etching and photo-zerox) based on field drawings in the Flinders Ranges with historical and cultural references that was a tribute to Hokusai and Heysen. The use of Haiku poetry gave linkages and layers of meaning based as much on contrasts as on connections. The final form of the work was a wooden box that contained the 36 prints, 36 collected objects and a diary/journal on the ideas around each print.

'It is possible that the play of opposites with the Patawarta series has part of its origins in the Ukiyo-e print obsession with mirrors and mirroring. In Japanese tradition the mirror was believed to reveal the 'self without shame'.
In retrospect the sparseness and minimalism which characterised the imagery of this series had a logic and a role central to the subject of the works.'
